Goban Goban Help

Editing games and positions.

How do I edit games and positions?

The position editing tools and attributes are in the "Position" drawer. Game information can be edited in the "General" drawer.

How do I setup a position?

In the "Position" drawer, the "Build" menu lets you edit the game tree, add and remove positions. On a given position, you can add Black and White stones at will. For instance, with the Black stone tool selected, clicking:

Once your position is setup, you should specify which player is to move. This is done in the "Annotations" tab.

Note that setup stones and moves cannot be mixed. Therefore, if the selected position comes from a move, setting up stones will first create a new position.

How do I annotate games and positions?

The "Mark" tools can be used on any position, to add or remove markup symbols on intersections and stones.

Annotations an comments can be specified in their respective tabs, and game information can be specified in the "General" drawer.

How do I create variations?

Goban uses key modifiers to create variation moves, just like when displaying them. With the "Play" tool selected, clicking on the board with the <alt> or <option> key pressed will create an alternative move to the current move. Clicking on the board with the <ctrl> key will create a new descendant to the current move. In both cases, the new move will be the principal variation (the first branch from the previous move).

To create a variation with a setup position, rather than a move, the menu from the "Build" tool can be used.

How do I select a variation?

In addition to the techniques described in Analyzing games and variations, the "Position" navigator displays the game's tree of variations in a browser. In this browser, each column represents a line of play. The first column contains the principal variation (the real game). When a node or move has an alternative, the browser will display it in the next column to the right.

This browser can be used to navigate in the game tree. In the browser, nodes and moves that are in the selected variation (the selected node and it's ancestors) are in black; others are in blue.
